We're hiring! Director of AI Innovation in Medical Education

In collaboration with UCSF’s Department of Medicine, the Division of Clinical Informatics and Digital Transformation (DoC-IT) is launching a search for the inaugural Director of AI Innovation in Medical Education.

Qualifications
The Director will have a track record of accomplishment in clinical informatics and AI. While this may be in research, education, or clinical operations, it is expected that the Director will specifically focus on enhancing our educational mission by taking advantage of AI-based tools and strategies. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate a track record of leadership, strategy, and communication skills, combined with a robust knowledge of AI, clinical informatics, and digital tools. This role is open to both internal and external candidates. Candidates must hold an MD or equivalent degree. 

Role Description
The Director will serve in a role that bridges the interests and needs of the Division of Clinical Informatics and Digital Transformation (DoC-IT) as well as the broader Department of Medicine. The Director will be responsible for leading two broad areas: (1) educating about AI - educating faculty in the Department of Medicine about AI and its range of potential applications (clinical, research, administrative, education) and (2) educating with AI leading the Department of Medicine’s work in the use of AI in our training programs, spanning medical student, residency, fellowship, and CME. 

In this evolving landscape, the Director will shape their role to meet the dynamic needs and opportunities presented by AI and education. Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Develop a comprehensive roadmap for DOM in the two areas described above 
  • Advance educating about AI via staying up to date on enterprise-level AI tools and resources (e.g., Versa [the UCSF-specific version of GPT-4], AI Governance) across mission areas and serving as a liaison between AI leaders in other mission areas and DOM faculty and staff 
  • Serving as a resource to DOM leaders, including Division Chiefs and Associate Chairs, on how to integrate AI into Dept and Division efforts 
  • Educating DOM Divisions and faculty about AI tools and resources via seminars, roadshows, etc. to ensure broad awareness 
  • Meeting with DOM Division Chiefs and faculty to learn about emerging needs and use cases 
  • Advanced education with AI via: 
    • Developing and executing projects using AI to enhance training in our residency and fellowship programs 
    • Working in collaboration with leaders in our medical school on using AI to enhance medical student education 
    • Working in collaboration with the Associate CIO for Education on developing educational policies and processes, including data sharing and analytics, that benefit the entire educational enterprise at UCSF 

The position will have a dual reporting relationship to the Chief of DoC-IT and the Associate Chair for Education in the Department of Medicine. The Director role will cover 35% effort. Remaining effort will be covered by clinical work, extramurally-supported research, and/or other leadership/administrative roles (as negotiated).
